ACT THREE, Scene 4 (JAE-SAHN HAS TOO MUCH TO DRINK)

(INT. JAE-SAHN’S RESIDENCE, LATE NIGHT.}

(JAE –SAHN IS SITTING AT THE DINING ROOM TABLE DRINKING A HALF EMPTY BOTTLE OF HITE WITH TWO EMPTY BOTTLES OF SOJU ON THE TABLE.)

(JAE-SAHN LETS OUT A LOUD WAIL. EUINICE ENTERS FROM THE PATIO.)

Eunice: Upon my knees, what doth thy speech import? I hear the fury in the sound but not the words themselves.

Jae-sahn: Oh, Eunice, what art thou?

Eunice: Your fiancé, my lord. Your true and loyal one at that.

Jae-sahn: Come, swear it! That thou be true of heart.

Eunice: Heaven doth truly know. To whom, jagiya, INT. JAEINwith whom? How could I be false?

Jae-sahn (annoyed): Get out, Eunice, get out. Get out.

(JAE-SAHN SOBS QUIETLY.)

Eunice: Alas, the heavy day! Why do you weep? What’s wrong, my dear? Am I the motive of these tears? If anyone’s to blame for this incident, even if my father, though, it be. Lay not the blame on me. If you have lost him I have lost him too.

Jae-sahn: Alas, it hath pleased heaven to try me with affliction. Hath rained all kinds of scorns and schemes upon my head. Steeped me in poverty to my very neck. Worked me so as if into captivity I had been bound. And for my upmost hopes, I still cannot find in my soul a drop of patience. But alas, I am only a figure of scorn for others to point fingers at. Yet also do I bear this well, yea, very well. But there where I have garnered up my heart, whence either I must love or bear no life, the fountain from which my current runs or else dries up, this I cannot bear.

Eunice: I wish I knew how to help you.

Jae-sahn: Art thou, who art so lovely and so fair and smell so sweet that at thy presence the senses ache, just another weed to pull up?

Eunice: Why would you say a thing like that?

(JAE-SAHN FALLS TO THE FLOOR. EUNICE DRAGS THE HEAVY JAE-SAHN ONTO THE COUCH AND PLACES A SHEET OVER HIM.)
